Educational Exploration
Ivy Elementary School, Home of the Bluebirds, serves 357 students in grades kindergarten through fifth. The original school building opened in 1922 moved to its current building located in a rural area near Ivy where it has the capacity to employ 63 staff and faculty members as well as nine bus drivers. The school has an active student body, boasting a total of 24 teams and clubs, such as Destination Imagination and Honor's Choir. Ivy Elementary also won the Governor's Award for Educational Excellence in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The school was originally named for the tenacious and Albemarle-born Meriwether Lewis, most famously known for exploring the Louisiana Purchase with fellow travelers William Clark and Sacajawea in 1803. After undergoing a name review in late 2022 and early 2023, the school community decided to change the name of the school to Ivy Elementary to better reflect the school's and division's mission and vision. Ivy Elementary PTO runs the "Enrichment Zone," an after-school program with a variety of unique activities. Run by teachers and community partners, the Enrichment Zone seeks to engage students in art, sports, music, math, science and more.
